My Tachus Installation Experience

Prior to Tachus Fiber, I was a customer of Comcast (Xfinity) for three years. After numerous bouts with outages, failed equipment (two of their modem/routers) and their substandard customer service, I decided to make the switch to Tachus.

Just in case you were thinking about Comcast/Xfinity (think twice!!), here are their ratings from Consumer Reports

This is how it went:

I placed my order about a month out from my selected installation date and appointment window. I received an email confirmation of this appointment, in which the expectations were clearly set. It advised there would be two phases of the installation:

  1. A crew would come out a day or two before the actual in-home installation and dig a small trench from the box at the curb (they installed these for every home in the neighborhood over the summer) and run a fiber line to the utility side of my garage.
  2. On the selected day of installation, a Tachus technician would install their utility box on the garage, run the fiber inside to the home, then set up the modem and Wi-Fi (if applicable).

The day before my scheduled installation, the crew arrived to run the line from the curb to my garage. They hand-dug the trench, ran the line and were gone in approximately 20 minutes. They did a great job of filling the trench back in. I could barely tell anything was done to my yard. Wonderful!

The day of the installation, the technician arrived smack dab in the middle of my appointment window (10am – 11:30am). We did a walk through to determine the best place to run the line inside, and I eventually decided upon my office. This was beneficial in that a) it would be a fairly quick and easy install (only about 20-25 feet from the utility side of my garage to my office wall), and b) only two new holes would be drilled in my house.

It took him approximately 35 minutes to get the line ran and modem up and going! Amazing.

I opted for the “Tachus Smart Wi-Fi”, which is a wireless mesh network, enabled by Plume Home Pass, so he spent a few more minutes getting those two devices in place. After 10 minutes or so of set up in the Home Pass app, my entire network was up and running.

All in all, the installation was a resounding success. It was minimally invasive, the technician was friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and I am absolutely getting what I am paying for. It has been a long time since I have had service like this – so refreshing!

A couple of notes:

  • I ordered the 300 Mbps speed, which I decided was plenty to power my internet usage. I have tons of smart bulbs in the home, echo devices, a VOIP phone, computer, two cellphones, and two TVs streaming at any given time. After a couple of weeks, I’ve not encountered one single issue with speed, latency, or anything else.
  • I hadn’t delved into the mesh network stuff, always opting for the typical wireless router. The mesh network has changed my life. No more boosters strategically placed throughout the house. These two mesh devices pretty much cover my entire home (3000+ square feet). At the furthest ends of the house, the speed dips, but absolutely still reliable for streaming TV.
